In the late 1800s opium was a major global commodity. It was used mainly to treat gastrointestinal afflictions that were common during that time period. This, coupled with its effectiveness in relieving pain, led opium to be over prescribed by doctors. The cultivation and trade of opium and its derivatives became illegal when widespread addiction became a global health concern.
